Canals
I've always had a thing about canals.  It's telling that many of them continue to be maintained centuries after the roads and railways did for their original role as early arteries of the industrial age; canals effortlessly transitioned to their post-industrial function, as wildlife corridors and recreational waterways while their towpaths serve as popular walking and cycling routes.   It's a wonder that these artificial structures should so enhance the landscapes through which they pass.
